Reasons

QuickBooks Point of Sale fails to launch on your PC after the development of this error due to the reasons mentioned below-

  1. The shell process running in the background is interrupted by the Windows Firewall or other applications running on your computer.

  2. The Shell folder is inaccessible or contains unreadable files, which causes issues when the software tries to process the files.

  3. The Windows account you use doesn’t have permission to access the files on your system drives.

Solutions

You can prevent issues while launching QB Point of Sale by executing the methods mentioned below-

Solution 1- Stop the shell process and rename the user.config file

This error won’t let your launch QuickBooks Point of Sale or cause a crash in the software a few seconds after opening. This happens when the shell process running in the background gets interrupted, or the software fails to process a file inside the folder. The user.config file inside the folder might have been damaged, leading to issues when the software tries to process it. You can resolve the issue by stopping the QB POS shell process in the background and renaming the user.config file as shown in the steps below-

  1. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete on your keyboard and click the Task Manager option in the following menu.

  2. Go to the Processes tab and click on the QBPOS shell process to highlight it.

  3. Tap the End task option located at the bottom of the tab.

Once the shell process stops running, you need to visit C:\Users\(Current User Name)\AppData\Local\Intuit using the file explorer to find the QB POS files. Apply these steps thereafter-

  1. Click the View option at the top and mark the Hidden items checkbox with a single click.

  2. Use the Date Modified filter to sort the files and open the recently created QBPOSshell.exe folder.

  3. Right-click the user.config file and tap Rename.

  4. Add ‘old’ at the end of the file name as an extension.

  5. Relaunch QuickBooks Point of Sale.

If QuickBooks POS fails to open, try the next solution.

Solution 2- Sign in with your Administrator Windows account

QuickBooks POS might fail to run if it cannot access its program files in the system drive. The software will develop issues in the absence of the files and crash while opening.
